Wazi

Wazi: Strength in Unity
Although Tanzania is fortunate to be climbing above the continent’s worst infection and death statistics, the social effects of the HIV/AIDS virus are not improving.  Despite national efforts to educate and encourage testing, reality for those infected is one of struggle and hardship.  Treated as pariahs in their own villages by those as close as their own families, there is little hope for the outcast that battles alone.
In the rural jungles of the Rombo District in Northern Tanzania, these outcasts have banded together to stand against the opposition.  Held accountable to each other, it is in their numbers and their unity that they discover their greatest power. “Wazi” is a story about people who depend on each other and their group for their sanity, their health and ultimately their survival.  “Wazi” intimately reveals a handful of characters who’s struggle and who’s strength prove to be not so different than those of suffering people everywhere else in the the world.

Burning Man

Burning Man 2009: Evolution

Africa

While in Africa, it was hard not to notice a continuous life cycle.  The overwhelming wails from funerals, the countless number of orphans seeking help for basic necessities of food, clothing, and education.  This is the life cycle I came to know.

Life, survival, death.  Repeat.

Bishop

Located in the Eastern Sierras of California, Bishop is an adventurer’s paradise.  The vast terrain is often intimidating.  Ideal for climbers, backpackers, hikers, campers, fishermen, and hunters, or if you just happen to stop and fill up gas.  Bishop offers something for everyone.

South Central

In 2003, the city of Los Angeles changed the area’s official name of South Central Los Angeles to South Los Angeles, hoping to blur collective memories of violence and urban decay.  However, since the late 1980′s, the demography of South L.A. has been changing with the arrival of Hispanic immigrants.

In 2000, 55% of the residents were Latino, while 40% were African American.  This has lead to increased violence, street crimes, gangs, widespread unemployment, and poverty.  Those most affected are women and children.  Growing up without a father or husband, they are often forced to seek outside help for basic needs like food.
